TAKE A LITTLE DETOUR

Three ideas for a coffee-led London morning

A coffee, then a wander.

A coffee walk is better with a little room in the plan. Choose one neighbourhood, one main stop and somewhere nearby to wander afterwards. These are suggested neighbourhood pairings, rather than timed walking routes: check your own map, opening hours and the weather before setting out.

London Fields: market, café, bakery

Start with Climpson & Sons at 67 Broadway Market, then make your way around London Fields. If you want a bakery stop as well, Pophams is on Richmond Road. The two listings give you different kinds of visit: coffee from a roaster at the market, and a bakery-led pause further into the neighbourhood.

Broadway Market and the surrounding streets have a different pace on a busy market day. Keep the plan flexible and choose one café if you would rather spend more time walking than queuing.

Covent Garden: a cup around Seven Dials

Use Monmouth’s Covent Garden shop at 27 Monmouth Street as your anchor, then explore the streets around Seven Dials. This is a compact option for a coffee break within a larger West End day.

Monmouth lists a Sunday closure, so check the day before making it your only stop. Bring a reusable cup if you want to take your coffee along on the walk. Flat White on Berwick Street is another directory option if your day takes you towards Soho, but it is a separate stop rather than part of a prescribed route.

Peckham: two very different coffee stops

Old Spike at 54 Peckham Rye and Ukkei inside Rye Lane Market give you two ways into Peckham’s coffee scene. Old Spike connects coffee with its employment programme, while Ukkei’s smaller brew bar sits at Unit 30 within the market.

Plan around opening days: Ukkei currently publishes Thursday-to-Sunday hours. The market address is not the same as Old Spike’s, so open the directions for the shop you actually want. Add a neighbourhood wander at your own pace rather than treating both coffees as compulsory.

Keep it local, keep it loose

These ideas are about making space for a neighbourhood, not collecting as many drinks as possible. Save a couple of places in the directory so you have an alternative. Check the shop’s official website before a special trip, particularly for weekend hours and temporary changes.
